What are your intentions with me?

The other evening we circled around in Fashion X Art first get together to know what it means to be in a young art scene that still feels suspended across decades. We talked about gaps, between the generations, between industries and creatives, and you only get to know things in fragments - almost like oral history, passed word of mouth: how to get things, who to talk to. It makes visible a whole landscape of barriers for sustaining growth even more challenging for continuity . And in the bigger picture, it points to a gap in archiving our current creative landscape. Culture is so often viewed only as the past, but we fail to encompass its continuity, the people who are making it now too in art, culture, fashion, design. Whether it’s subculture, pop, music etc
the missing pieces of supply chains, the lack of resources. We asked if creative gig jobs could ever be listed with transparent pay, if local services could be mapped out, if guidance could actually be accessible for creatives outside of school. Also that creatives learn admin, mediation, the boring but necessary parts of business so we’re less vulnerable in ventures. All of it came down to one thing: how to bridge the gap, how to mobilise together for something better. All these conversations aren’t new, it’s been around in many collectives and in conversations, still burning through finding ways, so that community and ecosystem don’t just stay as words
Thank you to everyone who was present that day! my sister @haidayusof for co facilitating this together
Thank you especially to our kind host Nash Browning for providing us space and some foodies 🙏🏻🤍

Sis @haidayusof and I are opening the table of discussion with emerging fashion and art creatives on their experiences and curiosities in regard to the scene in Malaysia. It will be a demistifying outlet and a safe space for emerging or even established creatives to voice their woes and concerns out.
The gathering will be intimate and we welcome everyone to join but space is super limited (due to space) . Please dm me or my sister @dhanilliani @haidayusof if you’re interested to join us this weekend :)
Some light nyum nyum refreshments will also be served

in 2018 I made an ode to my late mother’s memory ( one of many ) of the little things she taught me growing up,
on sewing, pressing flowers within Atlas and encyclopedia books, lessons on gardening and its life cycles and its gift of memberi,
so naturally I pressed a number of malaysian grown flowers and encased them in between the thinnest layers of silk fabric and sewn the edges into place, completed by a branch from one of my favourite evening walks by the taman.
A kind of autopsy of her bones, the beribu- (ibu) that i feel is around me in anything green, reminiscent of her green nature and fingers
As pressed flowers lose their vibrancy - the colour faded, yet the fragility and presence remained. A soft monument to time, memory, deep grief and what is passed down through fabric, care, and decay. Echoing as well the pain of seeing her hide her cancer in the last few months.
it’s been 7 years since i created this piece and yet this work still hangs over adjacent to my bed has lasted longer than what I expected. Fragility frozen in its own time.
It was named different before in a show, but changed it later to
“Tinggal Beribu” - on whats left yet stays, whats given yet taken and what is a thousand mothers experienced within them

#before I go back into the cycle of work to make more kerja art - work , enslaved to the reality but also part of the magic is somehow making it look effortless.
so many versions of who others assume me to be out in the world, that sometimes I wear them only to be confused that its anything but what fits me.

A memory like clothing with textures
1. Went back to my hometown Penang as a family unit after more than a decade to touch base with late mom’s side for raya, brought up remnants of the past, and what it means for the very young me at the time, and with recollection what it presents to be now
2. In my collection of textiles, some vintage, some kamdar + sis’s personal creation at Armenian street against the decadent Baba- Nyonya tiles
3. Cult with friends for a final discussion on Poesy before it heads of to its new home, a museum by Dr Tan of Urmu in Port Dickson
4. Me as a worm for a reading room’s workshop at tintabudi on exploring sound
5. Kelingkan embroidering, feeling at home and thinking about Kak Nik’s perserverance and attentiveness in the craft
6. My very handsome Pakistani - Pashtun Babaji ( Tok / Grandfather )
7. Apom hunting in Penang, followed by antique works in leroy’s family shop
8. Reading Roger Scruton’s views and ideas on ‘Beauty’ while being reminded of how Im most at home with the trees and the wind behind my back that I grew up with in Bagan Lalang Beach

Went to a Silver Smithing workshop with my sister, by the talented @leroyluar when we were back in our hometown. We both through the years had worn some of his beautiful pieces,
it was an in depth experience learning the processes involved — from the sawing, filling, burnishing - polishing, firing, doming, soildering, stippling, boiling ettccccc
my piece (me being creatively ambitious) was very stubborn in the making, it didn’t want to conform 😂🧎🏻♀️leroy said at times even with the right metrics and methods, the pieces would have their own air and semangat, imbued by the makers. It makes one think about the finesse in exercising brute strength — while negotiating a sense gentleness too with the pieces to mold accordingly, so the end piece is attentively halus.
a treat to have made custom made pendants while in my hometown in Penang. If you’re ever in town, drop by Chulia where his studio is located within his family run antique shop and give the workshop a try.

Conceptual Photography printed on Chiffon, Voile, Cotton Fabric, Light beaded embellishments , Text Embroidery
200 x 105cm
“Poesy”, a reversal in cloth styling and the many layers of a woman’s prayer dress. The piece plays with the meaning and materiality in fabric and act of wearing. The four fabric layers— likened to pages of a book— each carry a different fragment of the same image, revealing and concealing in harmony, presenting a balance between concealment and exposure, performing the nature of ambiguity in poetry. The gentle shifts in fabric and form explore the intimacy and fluidity of devotion.
The show runs from 8 March onwards.

If you’ve known me since my days of blogging when I was 15, you’d know I always have been one that conventions would fail to grasp and in interviews or articles —- they’re extracted and written as excitingly so. Of open vulnerabilities and defiance packaged in one.
from my habit of journaling, I wrote a piece lightly stitching together various parts of how art, fashion and trauma converge to seep synonymously into the fabric of my life after seeing a clinician to check whether I was considered autistic following the advise of people I cared for,
but found something entirely different that unravelled an entire’s practice, so for my birthday I made it into art 🐑🧎🏻♀️🤍

Nosferatu for the start of another nosey - unhinged year,
couldn’t be bothered to post on my feed lately, have been humbled by the art both the contemporary and historical in the city of Milan and Florence and all in good company, left me staring at my ceiling in bed after marveling the floors and ceilings - very much alive, breathing and dressed in painted centuries
opened a flood gate of ideas im tenacious to test out once im back 🐑🧎🏻♀️

Last November, Enda, a good friend of mine who is an art researcher - curator - artist himself was in town, hosted him around during his short visit to talk about pending projects amongst other things, mapping art as an ecosystem.
Enda is part of the collective, Ruang Rupa and runs a separate art collective at Pontianak, his hometown.
Through the years we often work and bounce off ideas ever since my short residency period at Gudskul Jakarta in 2019 in which we got acquainted and from work have caught on meeting during joint art escapades in several countries, Germany - Indonesia - Malaysia
- Monthly Niyat
